I recently contributed a short piece about the lookouts of the southern Los Padres to the ForestWatch newsletter’s “Backcountry Journal” feature.
Those interested can read it here.
It may be forgotten by now, but when in the early 70’s at least, anyone hiking up to a manned or womaned tower become eligible to get their Squirrel Card which meant you were now a member of the “Ancient and Honorable Order of Squirrels” I got mine from the woman manning Nordhoff Tower named Harriet who lived up there. I remain a “Squirrel” to this day.
